USB 2.0, 1394, and Serial ATA comparison chart
Looking at the above comparison chart, the most noticeable difference over USB 2.0 and 1394 is Serial ATA Burst transfer rate. The results of eSATA are dramatic and with no protocol overhead issues as with USB or 1394. The eSATA storage bus delivers as much as 37 times more performance. This ability is perfect for using an array of drives with performance striping behind the eSATA (external SATA) host port.

The above chart and information can be found at http://www.sata-io.org

SATA I Dual Port PCI Bracket Connection Information

The Serial ATA dual port PCI Bracket installs into your PC as you would install any other PCI related card or bracket. However, the cable end of the PCI bracket needs to connect to either the SATA enabled mother board or SATA controller card within your PC.

Because this is a dual port SATA PCI bracket, two available internal SATA I port connections must be available to enable both ports on the bracket. Both ports however are independant of each other meaning if there is only one available SATA internal connector to connect to, then only one of the SATA PCI bracket ports would function.

For an example of a PCI SATA I controller card, go here. This allows an external SATA device connection to be made from an internal source (the PCI controller card) by connecting the cable end of the single port SATA I PCI bracket to the controller cards internal female connection.

Tech Notes:

Because of the standard design in the SATA I Dual Port PCI Bracket connectors, proper alignment and connection are guaranteed and can not be connected in any other position. If forced, damage may occur to both the internal SATA port and the SATA PCI Bracket. Single port SATA I PCI brackets are also available.
Serial ATA Cable Connection Tips:
If you are unfamiliar with SATA cable connections, follow these tips to ensure a proper connection.
  • Always follow ESD recommendations when working with electro static sensitive devices.
  • Make sure there at no obstructions inside of the port connections such as any packing materials the cable or PC may have come with.
  • Make sure you are trying to connect the correct type of SATA cable to both your device and PC. Looking at your connectors ports, you should have a male and female of the same type connector.
  • Make sure the cable, once connected, is seated properly into the female port by checking for any play that may be presenting itself, in most case a little play is acceptable but if excessive, the port connections should be checked.
  • Always check for guide placement before trying to make the connection between PC and device to avoid damage.
  • When installing the SATA I Dual Port PCI Bracket or other device into the PC, always make sure the power is off, the best way to ensure this is to disconnect the power cable from your computer.

The Serial ATA single port PCI Bracket installs into your PC as you would install any other PCI related card or bracket. However, the cable end of the PCI bracket needs to connect to either the SATA enabled mother board or SATA controller card within your PC.

For an example of a PCI SATA I controller card, go here. This allows an external SATA device connection to be made from an internal source (the PCI controller card) by connecting the cable end of the single port SATA I PCI bracket to the controller cards internal female connection.

As an example of a connection to a PCI Controller Card, the image to the left shows the cable end of the PCI external SATA I bracket to the internal female port of the controller card. The SATA I controller card was purposely taken out to show how the connection between the two are established.

Tech Notes:

A standard design of the SATA connectors allows for proper alignment and connection, connections are guaranteed not be connected in any other position. If forced, damage may occur to both the internal SATA port and the SATA PCI Bracket. Dual port SATA I PCI brackets are also available.

SATA Multilane cable diagram
The diagram above shows how the SATA-ML-3GB4X6 multilane 4 channel cable works in conjunction with a PC and multi bay enclosure.

Explanation, The Multi Bay Enclosure:

Both the enclosure and the PC must have the 4-channel multilane back plane device with ATA2 ports, this is where the 4-channel multilane cable will be connected between the two devices. The enclosure hard drives each have their own channel that will connect to the multilane back plane internal ports via an internal SATA cable. All drive channels to the back plane device converge into 1 output cable containing the information for each channel (4 channel max.) to the PC.

Explanation, The PC:

The PC operates similarly to the multi bay enclosure in that it also will contain a multilane back plane device to output the information to the hard drive on any of the 4 channels available. The channels from inside the PC can connect from either a SATA II PCI controller card or the mother board SATA ports if available,

The two images to the left are representations of how the SATA-ML-3GB4X6 Multilane SATA cable connects to the PC and Multi bay enclosure. The SATA-ML-3GB4X6 connects at both the PC and the Enclosure to create a single cable pathway to 4 SATA devices within one enclosure unit.

The top image shows a PCI bracket style connection that would be installed in a PC to control output to the storage device.

The bottom image is the SATA II multilane mounting bracket that would be installed into the multi bay hard drive enclosure.

Both these SATA II back plane multilane items are available through our sister site by following the links above.

Tech Notes:

The 4-channel multilane cable does not have to be used with all 4 channels or 4 hard drives. The multilane cable can be used with 2 drives without loss of information in any way. The channels represented in the multilane cable and back plane are independent of each other, one does not affect the other in any way.

The PC connections can be either on a SATA PCI controller card with internal ports or your PC's mother board SATA ports.
